Security and Privacy of Course Materials & Student Information
For help with any of the information below, please contact the LATTE Help Desk (x65883 or latte@brandeis.edu).
Securing Your UNet Login
In keeping with the University Computing Policies, instructors, TAs, department administrators, and other LATTE users should never share their UNet login password with anyone else. This compromises the security of LATTE course materials, grades and student information which is protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
An instructor should never use his/her own UNet login for anyone else, including a TA or department administrators. Instructors may assign a TA to their LATTE courses or request that the LATTE Help staff do so. (latte@brandeis.edu or x65883)
Closing Your Browser After Each Session
Because browsers temporarily cache login information, all users should close their web browser after finishing a LATTE session to prevent anyone using the same computer from logging in as them. This is particularly true for faculty, TAs, and department administrators, who have access to sensitive information in the LATTE course. Why Not Send Email Attachments?
Sharing files in LATTE is superior to the practice of emailing course materials as attachments for several reasons: you're not reliant on changeable student email delivery systems; your students needn't bother with the hassle of opening or unzipping the attachment; and you're not putting a burden on the campus email servers and student inboxes by sending potentially large files to multiple recipients simultaneously. It also gives students a central location to find course materials.
Releasing Grades to Students
One of the strengths of LATTE is that it can be used to release grade information to students. If you intend to share grading information with your students, we recommend you make use of the Gradebook. This is a built-in feature that allow instructors to ensure students have access only to their own grades.
Note: Official grades must be submitted at the end of every semester to the Registrar's Office through SAGE. The official record of a student's final grade for the course is kept with the Registrar; a student's official grade is never taken from any records kept in the Gradebook in LATTE.
Restoring Past Courses
When Library & Technology services restores a LATTE course that has been taught into the current semsester, no student information or work from the past semester should remain. Instructors should verify that their restored LATTE course contains no information from past semesterss that might be inappropriate to share with new students, such as forum posts.
